I hate asking this sort of question, and even bringing this sort of thing up on the gentoo website, but I just can't hold it any longer. Months and months ago it seemed everyone in #gentoo was talking about how great Gentoo is -- and I have no doubts about how great it is -- but now it just seems like all of the Debian elite went to Gentoo, or some other catastrophe like that. All I know is that not long ago #gentoo was excited about Gentoo and telling others about it (this was when I first found out about it), but now everyone just throws a cold shoulder or spews forth the same type of stuff you hear in #debian and other channels. The Debian channel is one of the rudest that I know of, that's why I used them as an example. Can't we have back that love and enthusiasm -- and desire to help others -- for Gentoo that we used to have?

As things get a little too popular the tight and friendly community is just flooded and dies. I usually stick to smaller groups or channels with friends with the same interests to get help (or use forums).

Profanity will get you nowhere. The gentoo support forums are quite friendly. The only place on the forums anyone is likely to get flamed is on OTW.

I don't think I posted any profanity in this thread or in #gentoo. I'm one of the nicer chatters you'll find :)

Strangely, I have never really noticed much rudeness on freenode at all. I idle #gentoo all the time, and whenever I join #debian to get some help everyone seems just as nice as they do on #gentoo. Perhaps it is just the time of day?

I think your complaint (and #debian, and IRC nastiness in general) can be explained by John Gabriel's greater internet f***wad theory :D

#gentoo regulars: It's just a joke. Don't try to kickban me from the forums. Please...

I have personally found #gentoo to be very friendly although I also think #debain is friendly too (although I haven't been there for some time) so maybe I'm just wierd.

I've been using IRC for a bit over a year now (started out on Xnet - still use it) both to visit with online friends, and to help folks who need advice with their reefs (#reefs on Xnet). I have never seen anything close to the number of users as I did the other day when I hit #gentoo. Talk about a swarm! But, I waited, tried to phrase my questions as intelligently as possible, and got LOTS of (very friendly) help.

Yea that is one thing, unless you are paying full attention to #gentoo the scroll rate can be a bit overwhelming. Although it does mean if you have a problem there is a good chance at least one preson will know the solution :D.

seamaiden, though perhaps not the case, you being
female might have something to do with people being
helpful and friendly.

anyway, to stay on-topic, when i was in #gentoo
people seemed friendly and helpful as well; indeed
it depends on your own patience and on how you
ask your questions.

there were a few not-so-friendly people there too,
but if they create too much of a ruckus, they're ta-
kan care of by the ops or other users.

I hope I am not asking a stupid question, but in my 3 minute search on Gentoo's mainpage I did not see it anywhere.

Which server is hosting #gentoo? Where do I connect to get to that channel? It will be nice to lurk there while I am working on getting Gentoo installed.
