I compiled my kernel 2.4.25 on Ultra10 manually, but the size of kernel is too big(/usr/src/linux/vmlinux is about 5M!). So it can not boot up my system.
my kernel parameters were from Install Guide:
http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/mirrors.xml

could anybody tell me which parts in kernel can made in moudles?

Later versions of SILO get round this - (Can't remember which I'm afraid - I'm not at the system at the mo).

Also, in your kernel compilation, try

make image

That will strip it so it might then be small enough.

Silo-1.4.4 was stabilized over the weekend, which allows for larger sized kernels in the more recent kernel releases. I believe 2.4.25 has this support.

Let us know how it goes.

I tried to install silo-1.4.4, but failed. How can I do?
Code:
livecd root# emerge --pretend silo

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies    ...done!
[ebuild  N    ] sys-boot/silo-1.3.1-r1

livecd root# emerge --pretend ">silo-1.4"

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies
!!! all ebuilds that could satisfy ">silo-1.4" have been masked.
!!! possible candidates are:
- sys-boot/silo-1.4.4 (masked by: ~keyword)

!!! Error calculating dependencies. Please correct.

Try syncing your portage tree via the emerge sync command first. Then silo-1.4.4 should be available via emerge.
