I am posting on this after looking around quite a bit for an answer to my error. I hope that someone more familiar with gentoo could help me out.
When I boot the machine I get the error message:

Kernel Panic: unable to mount fs (3:43)

or something to that effect. Similar errors have occured and been posted many times, but I have not seen any with the 3:43 marker. I am away from my computer right now, but I can post more info if you think that would help. Mainly I am curious to see if anyone has seen 3:43 before.

Thanks

The (3:43) part is just the major and minor device numbers for your root partition. So, other error messages and threads thereof would most likely be applicable.

Likely causes include:

  • Not compiling in support for your root fs into your kernel
  • Wrong root device specified to the kernel for boot
    ...

Perhaps this could help in the diagnostics:

* I have just completed the install from the walkthrough
* I have not yet had a successful boot, except cd
* I followed walkthrough to the letter except for installing gentoo to a second harddrive, with win2k on the first.
*** all entries in fstab have been changed to reflect this (/dev/hdb)
*** entries in grub also changed (hd1,0)
* I am using ext2 for /boot
* I am using XFS for /
* The error in full reads:
kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k nls_iso8859-1 errno=2
kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:43

I would welcome any suggestions at this point. Thanks for the help.

I am starting to wonder if I need to rebuild the kernel, still not sure. If I do, can I just build a kernel by booting onto the CD and going from there, or do I need to restart the install and bootstrapping :(

Things that you may want to check:

- enabling XFS support in your kernel
- mounting /boot before copying your bzImage file

You can use the install CD, chroot and build the kernel. No need to redo install/bootstrapping. This thread may be of help.
