Gentoo's "installer" is the build guide at http://gentoo.org/doc/en/build.xml, assuming you're using x86 hardware. I found the instructions to be very clear, well-written and straightforward. I have heard talk of one or more anaconda-based installers that are in various stages of completion. Maybe this thread might be of interest to you, although it may not be current with 1.4rc1, and I haven't noticed anything from vprada on this subject in a while. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Definitely will take hours, even on fast hardware. You're compiling everything from source when using Gentoo.

I hope and expect that you will get lots of different opinions and reasons here. For me, the control of exactly what goes into my system and how it is compiled (with support for optional things like SSL and East Asian text handling that I want, and without support for things like KDE and gpm that I don't want) is more important than the performance increase, but the performance increase is certainly noticeable over Debian, which was the binary distribution that I switched to Gentoo from. I have never used Lycoris, so I can't comment directly on it. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |
