establish network connection after install?

Hi, this is a really stupid question. I started an install, and then had to leave it aside for two or three weeks for more pressing matters.

I finished installing, and I booted for the first time successfully. But the network interface doesn't start automatically. Specifically it's not connecting to the name server.

Two weeks ago, after loading the file systems, I was able to connect and do name resolution (www.yahoo.com) by doing it manually. But I forgot the command I typed. Thought it was

go to /etc/init.d/
ifconfig net.eth0 up

That must be wrong.

BTW, can someone point me to documentation about setting up eth0 ? anything on gentoo. . rj
