Posted: Tue Feb 10, 2004 5:30 am Post subject: HP Compaq NX9010 - Need configuration advices ! |
|
|
Hi everyone!
I just got a NX9010 (laptop) :
Pentium 4
RADEON IGP 345M
I would like to run Linux 2.6 on this computer... I already was at 2.6 under an older laptop, but this laptop has fairly new hardware, and I think I'll need all the lastest (and untested stuff...) software to make it run smooth
I've got a couple of questions :
First, the kernel. I was previously a user of the vanilla kernel; now I think I'll need to go for a more patched kernel, with APCI and ATI up2date... What kernel should I choose ? love ? mm ?
btw, are the mm patches to 2.6.1 merged to the officla 2.6.2 kernel ?
--
Next, does anyone have tips and tricks about the video hardware ?
I did a few searchs on google about XFree and the ATI RADEON IGP 345... I suppose I should go for the lastest ~x86 XFree build ? Yes ? Will I need special drivers ?
--
Any advices on how to set in the kernel the differents options for CPUFREQ ? I just red the kernel docs and some docs about P4 cpu scalling, but i'm kind of lost !!! Is there a governor in the kernel that will automatically adjust the freq to my max (2.8 Ghz) when I need it (cpu usage / time), or should I play with user-spaces programs and scripts ?
Also, does that means that while the laptop is boostraping gentoo, i'm really compiling at 1.5 Ghz and not 2.8 Ghz ?
Thanks for replying, I know that this is many questions in one post, but I think that this could help many other people also !!! |

www.consultmatt.co.uk has a section on using Gentoo with the nx9005 laptop, including kernel 2.6.0 and 2.6.1 IGP patches.
I'm using a different model, but also with an IGP340M video chip, and am currently struggling with 3D support for it with the 2.6.1 kernel, but at least I now have decent 2D support.
Good luck though, I can't find much else about getting them working. |

I have gentoo up and running on my nx9010. kernel is 2.6.4-r1 Just emerged xfree 4.3.0-r5 last night , messed with XF86Config a bit, accelerated mode is on, glxinfo says direct rendering is No. also says "Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0". Not sure what that is about i have glx and dri loading in XF86Config, i have the DRI section at the bottom. XFree86.0.log seems to only have one clue, saying that direct rendering is not yet supported for this card. I have drm radeon driver built into the kernel and XF86Config is using driver "radeon" i believe they are one in the same but i am unsure. Best performance of radeon is what im working on now. Then i will move on to wireless card, then i will work on IR and 1394, both of which seem to load fine but not sure if they work. USB is working fine. I am not doing any cpu scaling. I tried a bit on i2c stuff, could only get eeprom info from lm-sensors. sensors-detect finds ali1535 and eeprom, only seems to display eeprom info. Not sure if there are any other sensors to display temps etc. All ACPI stuff seems to work beautifully. I guess i dont have a question, just trying to put in my 2 cents about the nx9010, hoping to get more peoples input. See if we can help each other. My Thanks go out to martinm1000 for showing me his kernel config. Gives me something to bounce off. _________________ truth

|
|
Well since this information could possibly help people out there, there is the information I sent to truth :
Here is my .config file.
It is for the 2.6.4 Kernel. There might be traces in that file about options comming from some patches I tried a while ago, but I'm now using the vanilla kernel.
I'm using the user space governor in the kernel to control the cpu speed (from 1.5 to 2.8 Ghz). The daemon I use is powernowd.
For the wlan part, I was able to detect a wireless network using ndiswrapper. I did not try to connect to it, but it should be ok. Note that the wlan led does not work with this driver. Maybe I'll try the wrapper from LinuxAnt when I'll go wireless at home.
Oh and one thing to note... I tried the new framebuffer ati driver that appeared in the 2.6.3 Kernel... but I had display problem with it on the console; So I'm using the 'old' one. Maybe things were fixed in 2.6.4, I still have'nt tried.

I know about the orinoco_pci (for the wireless part), but I think that this guy didn't have the same wifi network card in his laptop than me. I tried it and it didn't work. As far as I know, you will need the Windows driver and a linux/windows ndis wrapper. (ndiswrapper or linuxant (!free, but cheap and you can download it to try))
For the ATI Part, I'm not sure, but I think the DRM won't work unless you try (and probably patch) a lot of things. I was waiting for XFree 4.4.0 for this one, but we now know that this could take more time to wait for a good simple ati drm support. |

And by the way, if you don't use any cpufreq governors for this laptop, it will run at 1.5 Ghz, and never at 2.8 Ghz !
So far powernowd is doing a really good job, setting the cpu to 2.8 Ghz when needed.
I tried the other governors and cpufreq configs, but they all gave me bizarre and wrongs speed detections (but no errors !).
The settings I have now are in the kernel config log I posted. |

Oh my...<eyes popping out> while seeing that without cpu governing it will never run at 2.8. AROOOHGA looks like ill be setting that up when i get home. Ill have to look all that stuff up because i would prefer it ran at 2.8Ghz 24/7 if there will be any governing going on i want to be the Governer, the President and the King!!! If i have a 2.8Ghz processor i want it to run at 2.8 damnit. _________________ truth

Well it is a good time to have to laptop run at 1.5 when its load is near 0....
1. Better for the battery
2. NX9010's 2 cpu fans are quite loud, but when you run at 1.5, the cpu will generate less heat.
3. Environmentalists will like you even more
Btw, under Windows the laptop is also running from 1.5 to 2.8 Ghz.
You might want to update (flash) your BIOS also; recents BIOS have been modified for better fan control, and since then, the fans do not run at full speed all the time
When the governor is compiled in the kernel, you can check the cpu current speed by doing this (from memory, I could make a mistake) :
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_setspeed |

Well Governing is working, well at least scaling_setspeed is constantly changing depending on the needs of the laptop. Not sure that proves the processor is actually fluctuating. I will say this..I now understand why general properties shows proc speed as lower than chip top speed in windows. I use the acpi processor driver because the p4_clockmod driver causes fluctuations from like ~300Mhz up to the 2.8Ghz, and i dont even know that the processor is able to change to so many different clockings with this laptop's mobo. So i feel more comfortable with 2 setttings of 1.5Ghz and 2.8Ghz provided by acpi driver. Still no luck with direct rendering in X with this video card. Actually im having a weird problem with Gnome. Stage 1 Install, Xfree-4.3.0-r5, Gnome-2.4.2 .....non root users cannot get Gnome to work correctly. applets give error: couldnt fork process (resource unavailable) one of those applets happens to be show_desktop, however time applet shows, gnome start bar shows, cant run anything on it however. /tmp perms are 1777. all ~/.gnome* and ~/.gconf* dirs and files are correct perms. Ill do a little more searching this weekend on that problem. Martinm1000 you are correct the orinoco_pci driver does nto work for the broadcom 802.11g adapter we have, so i will setup ndis wrapper to drop the wires. Then im gonna mess with lirc to try and program a remote to test the irda and will post results here when completed. _________________ truth

I have an nx9005, which is a similar but cheaper model.
You can get accelerated X with the radeon cards these laptops have, but it does not work out of the box with wither XFree 4.3.0 or (I believe) 4.4.0. I found that both the kernel needs a minor patch to shift the base of the framebuffer and XFree needs patching to support these IGP type radeons.
Supposedly the XFree patches are in the DRI tree and will move into XFree on the next DRI sync. I'm running a patched 2.6.4 kernel and XFree 4.3.99.16. There is a long bugzilla thread about the business here: http://bugs.xfree86.org/show_bug.cgi?id=314. In particular, I'm using the ATI/DRI patch for kernels 2.6.0-test4+ patch to fix the kernel, and the Make it compile (and work) with CVS HEAD as of 2003/10/12 patch for XFree. There's a patch for 4.4.0 at the bottom if you really want; I haven't checked if this works.
I have the cheapo IGP 320M for which adding DRI only really lets me use really slick screensavers and 3ddesktop - it's not up to anything else. I get 500fps in 16 bpp at 1024x768 from glxgears.
On an entirely different note, has anyone managed to get software suspend working with these laptops? |

Ok so i figured out the problem non root users were having with gnome. It was my /etc/security/limits.conf...... settings were too restrictive. Im checking out xfce4 at any rate. Now on to wireless NIC and then to IRDA stuff. I will keep this thread posted as i go along to help anyone before me. Also i have a question to ask of anyone with an nx9010 or laptop with similar problem as the following:
grub splashscreen is only 640x480 , on all other laptops ive set gentoo/grub on it was always fullscreen at 1024x768. once it gets past grub and into framebuffer vga-791 works fine. Wondering if anyone else had this problem and if there is a solution to setting grub to fullscreen.

For Grub, I don't think there is a solution; I taked to someone on HP support and they said that the bios of the nx9010 didn't support "zooming" of lower resolutions. so you will have to use the framebuffer in 1024x, while the kernel load. |

I can live with a smaller grub splash screen, but im having a heck of a time getting ndiswrapper 0.6 working, i have followed the INSTALL doc to the letter but nothing. It doesnt complain it just loads without displaying device and wlan0 does not show up with ifconfig. I know the wireless works as i am using a wireless cisco pcmcia nic right now. Martinm1000 you probably dont have 2.6.4 kernel but if anyone could briefly describe how they got ndiswrapper working with this laptops builtin broadcom nic i would appreciate it.

Well I have Kernel 2.6.4. I'm not sure the version of ndiswrapper I tried, but its was 0.4 or 0.5.
The nic is a Broadcom, but I don't remember the number... lspci will show you.
I'll try to remember to check this tonight, and I'll post how I did it. |
