If you do a emerge rsync, you can download the kernel |

That all sounds pretty normal to me. If you read the install guide you would see that the error you mentioned will be had and that the emerge rsync would fix it. Also you would see that you have to download and install the kernel of your choice. You are not tied to one kernel with gentoo and including an arbitrary one with the stage3 tarball not only makes it bigger but may not appease everybody. Its better to just leave it out and let the user decide. |

Hi,
first of all, this problem was NOT there using the 1.3 stage 3 tarball!!!
Why comes the problem with the 1.4 rc and not with the 1.3 ?
Second problem:
I have dsl and no gateway, so normaly put the pppoe files in /usr/distfiles and make an emerge of them, so I can install them without actual i-net connection!
But now I can't do this because of the profile problem, I first have to to emerge rsync but I can't do emerge rsync because my ppp things aren't installed...
So this way to install gentoo without gateway using t-dsl isn't possible with the 1.4 rc stage3!
Why?
I hope the problem is solved with the final 1.4 release

No, "emerge sync" is not so drastic as to require you to bootstrap the system again.

I agree that the installation instructions are lying, if indeed there are no portage tree and kernel sources in the stage 3 tarball. I will file a documentation bug against this.
However, assuming you have network access, you should be able to just: Code: | # emerge sync
# emerge vanilla-sources |
...and you should be set up with /usr/portage and /usr/src/linux, and you can just proceed with the rest of your installation. Replace "vanilla-sources" with "gentoo-sources" or "xfs-sources" or something else if you prefer.
EDIT: @damodred: I thought there was PPPOE support in the 1.4 CD? Is this not the case, or is it not working for you?

I just did the same install and encountered the same problem - no kernel sources in /usr/src as expected after reading the install guide.
Otherwise, the install went fine :-) _________________ My next computer is also a Gentoo computer |
