i'm wanting to upgrade to X 4.2.1, i'm hoping it has better support for my video card (Radeon 7000), this might be in the mask file, but how does one unmask a package in there? some lines have > signs, some have = signs, some have # signs.?

also, does anyone know if moving to x 4.2.1 will recompile anything that was built on x? kde, etc?

The '#' are comments as you know, and as a wild guess '=' are mask anything that = and '>=' is = and = greater than.

To unmask xfree 4.2.1 you'll just need to remove the = before x11=base/xfree-4.2.1

When you emerge youd should see 4.2.1 :)

I would just put '#' in front of the xree line... to "comment it out"

To unmask a package, add '#' in front of the line containing the ebuild name.
This has been discussed already as you could see doing a search.

I would not recommend that you upgrade to 4.2.1 if you have any form of ATI card as the drivers are broken in 4.2.1 as I found out the hard way

On the flip side, I have an ATI card (radeon mobile) and running 4.2.1 fine. YMMV however.

Xfree86 4.2.1 runs like a champ on my machine and I have a Radeon 7500, using the daily snapshots from DRI.

I also have a ATI Rage 3D Pro LT on my notebook and running X4.2.1 without a problem. Still missing DRI for this card, but I don't think I'll get DRI running on this one, ever :-(

regards,

According to the release note, there is nothing new for video dirver (just a revert for some ATI values).
Does anybody get 3D support through DRI for the Radeon 8500 on this version?

i haven't upgraded x just yet, but did re-build a kernel, the radeon stuff is now compiled as a module in the kernel. glxinfo says i've got dri, but glxgears give at most 120fps, and it's choppy at best. i'm running 1024x768 in 16bit color. again, my card is a radeon 7000 (ve?). i would expect a little better than this with glxgears. does anyone know if ati-gatos is reqired to get this card working? it was masked in the current portage tree.

someone else mentioned dri snapshots, wouldn't a newer version of x have latest dri modules? where can i get the dri dailies to try out?

thanks!
jonesin' for some tuxracer.... (shoulda stayed with the rage128 or gotten an nvidia card)

Don't you have to emerge and run opengl-update?

http://dri.sourceforge.net/

Remember to install the drivers when X isn't running or bad things(tm) might happen.

I have a radeon "64M VIVO" (its a 7200 under the hood iirc) and seem to have had DRI working fine both in 4.2.0 and, for a while (I reverted) 4.2.1:

Code:

server glx extensions:
    GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_EXT_import_context
client glx vendor string: SGI
client glx version string: 1.2

OpenGL vendor string: VA Linux Systems, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Radeon 20010402 AGP 2x x86/MMX/3DNow!
OpenGL version string: 1.2 Mesa 3.4.2

here's some snippets from my XF86Config-4:

Code:

.

        Load  "extmod"
        Load  "xie"
        Load  "xaa"
        Load  "pex5"
        Load  "dri"
        Load  "dbe"
        Load  "record"
        Load  "xtrap"
        Load  "glx"
        Load  "speedo"
        Load  "type1"
        Load  "freetype"
EndSection
.
.
.
Section "Device"
        Identifier  "Card0"
        Driver      "ati"
        VendorName  "ATI"
        BoardName   "Radeon QD"
        BusID       "PCI:1:5:0"
        Option      "AGPMode" "2"
        Option      "AGPSize" "64"
EndSection
.
.
.

I used to have some crashes on exit/reset of kdm; lately its been good...

btw, I use gcc3.2, kde3.0, and portage 1.4...

I'm running 4.2.1 for 1 week, without a hitch, on nvidia gf2mx, however yesterday on my usual 'emerge rsync' I noticed the following files on /usr/portage/x11-base/xfree/files/4.2.1-patches/ :
Code:
002_all_4.2.0-ati-r128-vtswitch-fix-busmaster-enable.patch.bz2
003_all_4.2.0-ati-radeon-mobility-FireGL-7800.patch.bz2
004_all_4.2.0-ati-radeon-vtswitch-fix-busmaster-enable.patch.bz2

So I guess emerging 4.2.1 now, should apply them and maybe fix problems with ATI cards. If an ebuild is masked it is for a reason & and that reason maybe development :)

Have you tried utah-glx? they're hosted on sourceforge and an alternative to DRI for older non-DRI supported cards.

I have just found the Matrox drivers (from Matrox) wont install against 4.2.1

I downloaded the Source but it appears to be lacking nice things like config etc scripts .... anyone got these drivers compiled from source ?????

Cheers
Dale.

I am having the same problems with the low frames rates. I too am getting about 120fps, although with a radeon 8500. I use the dri.sourceforge.net r200 driver. I've tried changing every setting, and nothing seems to help.
