hi
i tried to install 1.4 rc1 tarball using the 1.2 cd.well i followed the installation guide and extraced the 1.4 tarball.when i make env-update it tells me that couldn't find profile and emerge rsync would fix this.i have to say that i have a modem and emerge rsync wouldn't be done.i continued to compile my kernel and when i went to /usr/src/linux i saw that i had no kernel sources.is the stage 3 tarball coming with no kernel sources?what i done wrong?

I did it the same way, and i have to do an emerge rsync to get the gentoo sources.
So you need acces to the internet to install gentoo this way(i assume).
You did nothing wrong

Not quite. The portage tree and the kernel sources are two different things. You can get the portage tree from http://cvs.gentoo.org/snapshots/. That goes in /usr/portage. The kernel sources you can get from http://kernel.org, for the vanilla sources. Those go in /usr/src/linux. Neither "emerge sync" nor "emerge gentoo-sources" will work until you get your networking connection active from within your Gentoo installation.

so i would suggest that the developers on gentoo must fix this problem.i think there is a pppoe and pptp iso of gentoo in ibiblio.well i guess is for 1.2.is it possible to use this iso to setup my modem connection and upgrade to 1.4 rc1 ?
