What steps do you guys go through before upgrading packages to backup information? |

If you mean configuration files, like those found in /etc/conf.d, this is already taken care of. If a package is upgraded, and a new config file is available, you can choose whether to accept the new one (thus losing your changes, if any) or you can keep your existing file.
Or, a combination of both.
This is all done by running etc-update after your emerge is complete. You'll be prompted when this is necessary. Search the forums for some graphical utilities to do this same function, as that might work better for you. _________________ s/(?<!gnu\/)linux(?! kernel)/GNU\/Linux/gi
