Hi,
I've spent all weekend trying to get Gentoo 1.2 to install on an old machine I have (Cryix PR150 120 MHz, 64M RAM, 8G HD) to no avail. I want to use it as a router (and other stuff) for a home network I am setting up. The problems begin when the bootstrap script tries to compile binutils-2.11.x -- the ebuild complains the tar file is corrupted but it does not appear to be. I can successfully untar the file manually. I altered the /etc/make.profiles/packages to use binutils-2.12.x (not the broken ebuild listed in the masked packages but one of the other 2.12.x ebuilds) and this fixed my first problem. The second problem occurred after glibc had been built and the script began to rebuild gcc -- it failed with some strange error messages. A second attempted results in more of the same. I downgraded the optimization in /etc/make.conf to -O2 and now glibc always aborts with an access violation.
Summary
1. Using binutils-2.12.x in the bootstrap process
2. Building using i586 flags; -mcpu=i586 (NOT -march=i586 since this chip doesn't have MMX) and -O2
3. Aborts with an access violation (sandbox) when building glibc
Help!
Has anyone successfully built a Gentoo system on such a system?

Could you try underclocking your CPU and/or making the RAM timing settings in your BIOS very conservative? _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |
