I cant emerge mod_php. I think it got something to do with the word masked behind the package description.

I don't think mod_php is masked by default, so what I suggest you do is to
try an emerge sync, then removing your /etc/make.profile and ln -s "/usr/portage/profiles/default-x86-1.4" (or whatever profile suits you the best) to /etc/make.profile, because some profiles got deprecated recently, causing ebuilds to appear to be masked. In case it's really masked, just edit /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask and remove the desired version of mod_php from the list.
