configure: error: Unable to find libgd.(a|so) anywhere under /usr/local /usr

!!! ERROR: The ebuild did not complete successfully.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 183, Exitcode 1
!!! bad ./configure

That's my output when I try emerging mod_php. I have Apache installed and it works fine. This is a very fresh install of Gentoo 1.2... and I haven't the slightest idea what could be wrong.
