Hi !

I am using portage-2.0.36 on gcc 2.95.3.
rac was kind enough to point me to download a snapshot of the portage tree from ibiblio.org 2-3 days ago.

Now I have the following output again after an
emerge rsync

/home/frank
[root@babe pts/0] emerge rsync
>>> starting rsync with rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage...

----8<---- cut out some output from here

media-libs/gst-plugins/ChangeLog
media-libs/gst-plugins/files/digest-gst-plugins-0.4.0-r2
media-libs/gst-plugins/gst-plugins-0.4.0-r2.ebuild
media-libs/libgd/files/gd-2.0.1.patch
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (521979 bytes read so far)
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(150)

>>> Updating Portage cache...

and this is where it finishes.
No output now, how many files transferred etc.. as usually it does.

So it appears after I downloaded the snapshot it workes, but now emerge never seems to complete the update.

The machine is very stable, no crashes in the last 6 month.
Things installed work fine.

Any insight why emerge does not complete rsync as it used to ?

One thing I found is if I run "locate rsync" is

/usr/portage/metadata/cache/net-libs/librsync-0.9.5
/usr/portage/metadata/cache/net-misc/rsync-2.5.1-r1
/usr/portage/metadata/cache/net-misc/rsync-2.5.2-r1
/usr/portage/metadata/cache/net-misc/rsync-2.5.4
/usr/portage/metadata/cache/net-misc/rsync-2.5.4-r1
/usr/portage/metadata/cache/net-misc/rsync-2.5.5
/usr/portage/metadata/cache/net-misc/rsync-2.5.5-r1

several versions of rsync metadata cache ?
emerge clean was run so, is this OK ?

Cheers:
frank

locate rsync outputs the same data for me, so that shouldn't be an issue.

alias finder='find /etc -regex .*cfg00.*'

Yes.

I run the above alias to find new config files after each update,
that may not be a problem.

I really do not know as things appear to work fine and stable, but

emerge rsync

would always always reproducibly throw me the same file I/O error from the same line.

rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(150)
