I ran the demo on 2.4.22 (I have since upgraded to 2.6.3 but still have some bugs it iron out) and yes, I'm using the real nVidia drivers (the nVidia symbol shows up when I boot into X).

Those results (Really low fps) were with the default graphics settings, which I think was 1024 x 786 (I can never remember the number that corresponds with 1024).

I ratched it way back to 800 x 600 and turned the details down/off and it became playable. I'm not sure how to check fps in UT 2004 but it "felt" like 30 or so, but once I did that but it was just kind of ugly.

As a side note, I play Savage a fair amount and typically get 15-35 fps.

The only other issue I can think of is the my box only has a 200 W power supply and I'm supposed to have a 300 W supply for the grpahics card. Could that be hindering things significantly?

That makes more sense. And no, the power supply should have no effect on the performance - if you don't have enough juice, the problems will be much less subtle - as in your computer will randomly reboot / not start / etc.

As for the gameplay issues, you might wanna consider upgrading your CPU first. Sorry to say, but if you didn't like the demo the way you had it, the full version of the game is not going to be that much more enjoyable :(

If you graphics card has a fan that connects to the PSU then it might be that. But I doubt it.

Also, bring down the console "~" and type "stat fps" to see your fps.

lol, netstat was showing the wrong ports. I found a list on a UT server hosting FAQ. I managed to narrow down the ones needed for client play:

Outgoing UDP destination port 7777:7778
Outgoing TCP destination port 28902

And now back to the game

Hmm that's odd... when I was playing ut2k4 demo I didn't need to open those ports. Does this only apply to the full retail version?

Well I don't have the full version yet either, but our firewalls might just be differently set up. Mine's set to drop by default, with quite a few other things thrown in (mostly grabbed from the gentoo security documentation).

7777 is the game port
7778 is the query port
28902 is for contacting the master server

doh!!

https://bugzilla.icculus.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1428
and
https://bugzilla.icculus.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1427

The AMD64 version can't connect to any netgames. This is pretty annoying :?

Hopefully it should be fixed quickly, the game isn't really a singleplayer game.

Just picked it up then.
Sound doesn't work yet (probably have to link alsa libs or something as I didn't install them with the game) but it plays really nicely.
An awesome game.

Lots of stability problems with this one. I'm rather disappointed at the moment. The most common error seems to be:
Code:
Critical: Assertion failed: p->model1 [File:KFarfield.cpp] [Line: 937]

The "K" appears to indicate this is a Karma problem. And I'm not the only one getting this error. Lots of folks on the official forums are reporting similiar difficulties. Strangely enough, the demo worked flawlessly, so this is a retail problem. Here's hoping they get a patch out soon as it's rather annoying to crash to the WM right when you're having fun.

Hi I got ut2004 just some minutes ago.
But I have quite the same problem as Zepp but I'm using a nvidia card.
When I run nvidia-installer --sanity I do get symbolic link errors and "different checksum" errors.
But I don't know how to use Zannox post here:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=135569&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=ut2004demo&start=125
Installation worked like a charm but when I try to run the game:

Code:
WARNING: ALC_EXT_capture is subject to change!
Couldn't set video mode: Couldn't find matching GLX visual

History:

Exiting due to error

I have even reemerged nvidia-glx.
EDIT:
Ah, well I don't know what fixed it now but after rebooting everything worked again...

I'm having trouble running UT2k4.

Just got home with my shiny new copy of UT2k4 DVD edition, and the damn thing
won't start. When I try to start UT with the ./ut2004 script it gives this error:

Code:
omicron@xerxes (~/games) $ ./ut2004
bash: ./ut2004: /bin/sh: bad interpreter: Permission denied

omicron@xerxes (~/games) $ /bin/sh ut2004
ut2004: line 49: /mnt/storage/ut2004/System/ut2004-bin: Permission denied
ut2004: line 49: /mnt/storage/ut2004/System/ut2004-bin: Success

Also:

Code:
-rwxr-xr-x    1 omicron  users         12M Mar 20 12:20 ut2004-bin

omicron@xerxes (/mnt/storage/ut2004/System) $ ./ut2004-bin
bash: ./ut2004-bin: Permission denied

(It doesn't run as root either, same errors.)

:?

I've got no idea where to start with getting this working. The UT2k4 demo worked
(works) fine on my machine, so why isn't this working?

If I can't get it running here, I'll have to boot to Windows, and you don't want that to happen. :P

Hi,
I got that same problem. Here is what you have to do to get it to work, for the special edition. Go into the /mnt directory and then run it like this ./strorage/ut2004. If you have the 6 cds then copy the install script to anywhere on your harddrive and run it from there. Hope this helps. Atari must of dragged its feet along on linux, since they won't even say that one thing in the manual.

I installed it as my regular user and the install process worked fine. I wonder if some of you experiencing installation problems are trying to install it as root. To run the installation program, I first mounted the install disc then ran:
Code:
sh /mnt/cdrom/linuxinstall.sh

Or whatever the name of the Linux install script is.

I'm getting ready to install the game in my Windows partition, which really sucks because I bought it primarily for Linux. But until Atari/Epic fix the crash issues, there's no point in trying to play it in Linux.

you can also mount the dvd-rom with -o exec, that gets rid of the permission denied errors

Wow, reading this thread makes me feel as though I've been really lucky. I just ran /mnt/cdrom0/linux-installer.sh and then when it was done "ut2004" and every thing's worked fine. It crashed twice in six hours. Call of Duty used to crash at least once an hour in Windows for me, I consider this a lot better, also they don't support the Linux client and only a few people (possibly one) worked on it. So I can handle a crash here and there.
Then again, I don't run Windows any more so it's not like I can say if it's more stable or not (which it appears to be).

Yeah, converting to linux only can be hard for a long time windows power user, but ut2004 on linux really helps!

I just bought it today and it runs great on my system. Install went smoothly also! It only crashed once in about 6 hours of play but that does not seem too uncommon for new games anymore so I am not gonna sweat it that much. All I can say is mucho thanks to Epic for making a linux version cause this is one of the best multiplayer games there is in my opinion. The vehicles are great too, I love running people over *splat!*

Daaaaamn, they have UT2004 at my local software shop for a measly 40$ (CDN) after rebate. I'm stacking up my money for my upcoming university studies right now, but at this price it's so tempting, argh!!

AMD64 version still can't connect to any netgames!
Futhermore there are random crashes, quite rare, but they happen.

I mean, wtf... the demo worked fine, no crashes and it could connect to any server. :x

I get random crashes, but I only get them after I've been playing for, like, an hour or so.

I get annoyed.

But then I just restart the game and continue playing Onslaught, and after I "PANCAKE~!" a couple of blues, I forget about the things that irk me...

P.S. It is possible to get the Pancake bonus with the raptor. Try it :D

Yes... Smashing and crushing people in the manta is always fun and relives stress. :D
