According to the Gentoo install guide, I'm supposed to put my "fully qualified hostname" (ie host.domain.com) in /etc/hostname.

Problem is, when I do that, the dhcp server refuses to give me a valid DNS mapping for my requested hostname. It only works when I only put the first part of the hostname in /etc/hostname. If I do that, the server gives me a DNS mapping, and other hosts can ping me by name.

But if put the whole thing in, my IP doesn't get associated with a name.
Unfortunately, NOT putting the whole thing in seems to make some Linux programs like X unhappy...should I just correct this in /etc/hosts and go on my way?
And does anyone have any clue why this problem happens in the first place?

Yes, it doesn't have to be qualified, but in my case I do in fact obtain a qualified name since the DHCP server updates the DNS record based on what I provide with the "-h" option to dhcpcd (I'm at a college).

The problem I'm having is a result of the server not liking that to be in the same format as my machine.

In any case, if all else fails, I think I can just hardcode it into the conf file and it should be okay.
Mostly I'm just curious as to what's going on here.

I read through the Name Resolution thread and my /etc/hosts is set up in a similar fashion to the example above.
In any case, it works for me now, so no biggie.
I'm assuming the differences in the required options for dhcpcd is just due to differences in the way that DNS/DHCP/domain servers are setup (my school is set up primarily for WinXP).
