Frst of all, I would turn off console blanking if you don't want to sit waiting for the compilation to finish ;) If your machine freezes, then you are able to see what the last output before the actual freeze

Code:
setterm -blank 0

Then I would turn on al debugging options in portage (emerge) and see what happens just before your system freezes. Maybe it will give you some clues.

Code:
emerge --debug --verbose dvdrip

Make sure your system is not being overclocked or something ;)

If you see any errors, feel free to post them here.

Good luck

You have to set the USE flag "gnome" before emerging gtk-perl (gdk-pixbuf must be installed before).
But this means that you are forced to install a lot of gnome stuff also

when you start up drip, it executes a script /usr/bin/dripgetdvd.sh. This looks in /etc/fstab for your dvd-drive.

Just create /dev/dvd through modification of your /dev/devfsd.conf and add a line in /etc/fstab for mounting /dev/dvd. This did the trick for me.
