JIT (ICQ) transport on Jabber

Since it's not showing up in the search, I wanted to point out that the Jabber transport named JIT from http://jit.jabberstudio.org/ is working perfectly under the standard Jabberd server installation that comes with Gentoo.

To start with basics, Jabber uses server-side things called transports to connect Jabber users to the other services such as AIM, ICQ, MSN, etc. The transports kind of snap in as modules on the server. The jabberd ebuild ships with a couple of transports, but uses the AIM transport to do ICQ since AOL has kind of unified those two services.

The problem is that the AIM transport (available from http://aim-transport.jabberstudio.org/) is kind of, well, bad. It is missing functionality and even missing some major features so that users can't take advantage of Jabber's full potential. It's buggy and not being actively developed.

The actual JIT transport is an actual ICQ transport, though, and so it has additional functionality that doesn't exist in AIM in the first place. Check its homepage for a feature list.

Anyway, back to the point. I downloaded and extracted JIT 1.1.6, ran ./configure, ran make, and was done with the building. I then edited the example configuration file to make it jive with the jabber config in /etc/jabber/multiple.xml. Just follow the INSTALL file that came with the tarball. It took ten minutes.

You will want to add it to your startup scripts in /etc/init.d to make sure it starts automatically, but other than that you should be set.

hi,

Jit is working fine... Just have an issue.
When i register, i get all my icq contact list, with some of them online.
If i juste disconnect and reconnect to jabber, the jit transport is still available but all the contacts remains offline.
No way to get back them online except unregister et re-register my uin into jit service.

Any idea ?

Try to comment out two config directives:

<own_roster/>
<no_jabber_roster/>

in jit.xml if you have the xdb section commented out.

I see JIT gateways on other servers are often failed offline. Why? Is the software unstable? Or do they catch changes in ICQ protocol?
