After this disappointing experience, I'm interested in learning of artists that are not signed with any major record label.

Anyone interested in a repository, post here. Posts should contain the name of the artist; genre would probably be very helpful. Official websites would probably be handy as well. Keeping posts formatted will also help. Something similar to:
Quote:
Artistname
Genre
www.official_website_here.tld

Comments: Any additional comments you feel are relevant to the artist you are posting about.
Of course, that is just a suggestion. A format similar to this will be easier to scan though. I'll be searching with Google later.

http://www.disciplineglobalmobile.com is a record label founded on the principle that artists - not record companies - should own copyright in their work. Unlike traditional record companies, it only operates the copyright on behalf of the artists, instead of forcing them to assign copyright to it.

It has some recordings by King Crimson, as well as other projects by several members of that band: Robert Fripp, Trey Gunn, Bill Bruford, Tony Levin, Adrian Belew. Recent works by Led Zeppelin alum John Paul Jones are also on this label, as are some other participants in Fripp's Guitar Craft seminars, such as The California Guitar Trio.

All of the music I have from this label I would classify as complex guitar music, predominantly instrumental.

My only financial connection to DGM is that of a satisfied customer.

They Might Be Giants
Quirky non-mainstream Rock & Roll
www.tmbg.com

Comments: They're about as non-commercial as it gets, and very fan oriented.

Seems fairly new, but The Sique.net Forums might be worth keeping an eye on.

Great, soulfull folk-ish music. Find her at www.darcieminerband.com. I don't know where you can get her CD- I picked it up at a show.

Erin McKeown-- hard to pick a genre, but anywhere near folk/funk/jazz might do. TVP Records. www.erinmckeown.com

Sleater-Kinney-- fits best into punk, generally; incredible band all-around. Kill Rock Stars Records. www.killrockstars.com.

The Mr. T Experience-- pop punk, brilliant lyrics. Lookout Records. www.lookoutrecords.com

Ani DiFranco-- Plays around with lots of different musical styles, but always an impressive musican (some of her guitar work is awe-inspiring). Righteous Babe Records. www.righteousbabe.com

Most of these web sites point to other great musicians and labels, too. I like the sense of cooperation rather than competition :)

Also, I haven't bothered checking Audiogalaxy in a while, but the web site itself (not the now-crippled file sharing service) used to be a great place for finding unsigned or indie artists of every genre.

I could go on for hours about great bands which are not signed to major labels, there are millions. If you're into hardcore at all, I can start an exhausting list of bands.

My only request is that the artists music be obtainable through some means other than live performances. Chances are, if they have a label, their music is purchaseable.

Thats not to say they shouldn't be listed. I'm guessing if a local artist was burning their own CDs, they'd be interested in selling them (via Phone #, mail or whatever). Anyone knowing of artists that burn their own CDs, or sell only through live performances, might want to ask [the artist] about other methods of distribution. Including that info here would be helpful.
