Great! I must download it. It'll take some time @ 20kbps.

Do you think I should wait a few days till the die hard RH/FC users have finished downloading the new release and the traffic has eased a bit?

anyone care to make a torrent of this or know one? I'm sure it's gonna be slow and busy for quite sometime.

I'm sticking to Gentoo for now, but I'll wait for the reviews - see if I can recommend it for others. :)

Hey, Vishruth, where in this great country of ours are you? :)

I don't see what all the fuss is about, it's just Red Hat with a new name.

Well I've used it a little and it seems like the same idea to me. Plus Red Hat openly admits they are dropping desktop releases and turning it over to the community as Fedora. So essentially it is the same.

I'm getting it with bittorrent... Blazing fast 21KB/sec down :(... Average torrent is 50% done with the peers... This will take a while, but I don't mind since I like gentoo a lot better anyways, I'll run it on vmware ;)... RH is my 2nd favorite distro anyways...

I'm looking for a mirror...

EDIT: WOW, even ibiblio is slow, I've never ran under my 2-3mbps/sec on them, but I get 5-18KB/sec...

EDIT2: Looks like torrent's getting somewhat better, 80KB/sec, but still not good... Check the peer's download speed (via some bittorrent gui thing), I would be extremely lucky and having the best download rate to get my 2-3mb/sec down... (highest is a bit short of 2mb/sec, note all values here are megabits)

I blazed ahead on my download maxing out my connection at 100kb/s with bt.

Sadly I must have done something wrong when I burned the CDs because they turned out bad...

nastiness - so now I'm upgrading an older test release using YUM instead.

No pun intented, but why would I switch to Fedora? I need a decent package manager. Nice screenshots are not interesting since I can create any desktop configuration I want with Gentoo. I could just use bluecurve with gnome and there you go.

Really, a Linux distro that allows you to manage and customise your system easily will win over most people. I have yet to find a package manager as versatile as Portage. This is no zealotry, this is fact. Even apt-get does not quite cut it for me. Anyway, I'll stop here with my rant.

Good luck Fedora!

okay, if you like me want your PC to just work and no longer want to compile from scratch - then you will enjoy Fedora.

Sure, I didn't try it but the installer has an option to select kde.

PostPosted: Thu Nov 06, 2003 4:28 pm    Post subject: rh9 -> fedora 1 Reply with quote

I have one machine left in my house that is still RH, its my file server. I decided to try out fedora last night and see how smooth the upgrade process from rh9 to Fedora would be. The instalation went smoothly, but overall Fedora1 is RH9 wilth redhat logos stripped from the machine and the blue fedora color scheme replacing it.

There are a bunch of worthwhile package updates and yes, there is kde 3.1.4, but here is a wierd bug or "feature". Fedora changes the gdm config so that instead of asking you if you would like to make a session the deault, it just keeps gnome as the default.

As far as anyone can tell so far, it's apparently just RH with updated packages.

I'm downloading it via bittorrent currently - 400mb to go.

They added a strange sort of graphical boot - it basically masks the init stuff with pretty X based bars and text.

Overall I like it very much, especially yum tickles my fancy - if only I could get the nvidia driver as rpm I would be happy, I hate compiling that thing.

Does it finally play mp3's or DVD's out of the box?

Or any other binary based distro for that matter. What advantages does Fedora have over, say, Slackware?
