Follow these directions to set the nice level of X.
http://bssteph.irtonline.org/linux/xfree86_instructions

I changed it to run at -15, and it is extremely responsive.

Code:
renice -10 $(ps -A |grep ' X$' |awk '{print $1}')

Or, you could run ps -A, look for the X server's PID, and then 'renice -10 [pid]'.

That's if X is already running. If you want it to renice at startup, see steel300's post.

i guess the only reason for evil-sources now is the sysfs backing store and reiserfs acls.

It's been out for a couple of days. I'm just waiting for andrew to release 2.6.4_rc2-mm1.

I didn't mean to step on your toes with this release. I got sick of people asking for supermount, so I included it. The pci ids db should have been included much earlier. I'm avoiding enything that will cause reiser4 to be less stable (sysfs backing patch). If reiserfs compiled without acl support, then I would have included that as well.

There are definite interactivity boosts by renicing X. Try and slow it down when you get the chance. I had updatedb, emerge sync, the ltp tests, and my regular windows open and it still didn't lag.

CFQ, AS is broken with the new CFQ scheduler.
