I have been trying to reinstall Gentoo 1.4, and it always dies in the exact same place, no matter what I try to do.

The message where it breaks:

Code:
 cd /lib/modules/2.4.19; \
 mkdir -p pcmcia; \
 find kernel -path '*/pcmcia/*' -name '*.o' | xargs -i -r ln -sf ../{} pcmcia
 if [ -r System.map ] then /sbin/depmod -ae -F System.map 2.4.19; fi
 (none) linux #

It always gets up to running 'make modules_install' and dies at the exact same point with the exact same message. I have tried various different things to see what caused the problem, but I cannot for the life of me work out why it keeps stopping.

I did a bit of a search, and the only other thing I could see with this problem said to move the /lib/modules folder and compile again. That doesn't make any difference, this is a clean install, there is nothing previously installed for me to move.

Can someone please tell me what would cause this message to appear. I do not have pcmcia enabled in my kernel compile options, this is for a desktop not a notebook.

I am stumped :?

I am having similar issues.

I am assuming that you are going off the x86 install docs, and have been right where you are. The problem you are seeing may be similar to mine in that you are progressing to the

mv /boot/bzImage /boot/bzImage.org

command.

I ended up bypassing that and am moving forward to the

cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot

Now to installing the logger. Will keep you posted..

FWIW, I agree with fugu-daitouryou (that's El Presidente Pufferfish in Japanese). Nothing unusual is happening.
