I emerged firestarter (emerge net-misc/firestarter), all the compilation process goes well but when I launch it a popup window appears telling me this:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Log file not found or access denieded.
Firewall log monitoring disabled.
You can configure the path to the log in the "preferences" section.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The only think that I can do is press the ok button so the window disappears but a segmetntation fault allert tells me that firestarter has crashet due a fatal error.
I tried to run it as a root but the same behaviour occurred.
Any one with this problem?

I haven't installed firestarter on my gentoo box since we've got a separate box as a gateway but here are some thoughts:
1) run it as root (to gain access on configuration and everything).
2) use the "no applet" option to avoid clashes with the gnome panel (I think it's "-a" but man it to be sure)
3) what system log daemon are you using?
I hope any of this helps _________________ Need to flame people LIVE on IRC? Join #gentoo-otw on freenode! |

I got the same errors, but...
I finally got mine to work somewhat, but not with emerge.
I compiled the gnone2 beta version from the firestarter site. Got it to run, and could run the wizard to set up the firewall rules. So I had a working firewall, but no monitoring, until...
I switched from metalog to sysklogd. Apparently, firestarter gets its monitoring information from /var/log/messages which is provided by sysklogd, not metalog. I'm sure the info is in metalog somewhere, but looks like firestarter was written to work with sysklogd.
I still can't get monitoring to work as a user, when it tries to load the allowed and denied hosts, ports etc files, they all come back as permission denied to read them...tried to change the permissions, but that didn't work.
Bottom line, is i got it to work to point where I know whats going on, and I can have an effective firewall |

The emerge package needs xmms-status-docklet which is not in the tree. (think that is the right package)
Have firestarter from emerge but coredumps each time I try to start it. Have changed to sysklogd, metalog didn't work. Think there is a prob with the log placement/table reading. _________________ I'm so small, I can fit under the door.

firestarter 0.9.0 works.
0.9.0 startes with the wizard, 0.8.2 did not. _________________ I'm so small, I can fit under the door.
