I've been trying to get acpi working on my laptop. So far I have emerged acpid and put it to the default runlevel. No problems.

However it will not respond when I press the Fn+F4 button to suspend the computer.

if I cat /proc/acpi/event I get
button/sleep SLPM 00000080 00000001

as the output when I press Fn+F4

That's only the beginning. When I do sucessfully suspend my computer and then unsuspend it, my usb mouse is dead. I don't know how to restart it other than rebooting.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have to configure acpi-events first in /etc/acpi/events/default and bind there different actions to different buttons e.g. close lid to suspend etc, check docs for details.

USB modules and suspending are my eternal pain in the ass also  but mostly they work, though I prefer to disconnect USB-mouse before suspending. If you use suspend from swsusp.sf.net you can try to update the suspend script, play with configuration, e.g. try stop and unload all USB related before suspension. If you use built-in suspension I consider you to visit swsusp.sf.net and get there all the patches.
