I have Pentium 2 300Mz, 256 Ram with Adsl connection.

Do you think I'll be able to install/run this distribution on this mashine?
The Cpu is not too slow?
Many Thanks

Yes, it will install just fine. It will take a while for things to compile, but it will still work.

Since you mention you're fairly new, and have used RedHat before, I'm going to assume you haven't compiled a lot of stuff from source.

So, with that said, when I say it will take "a while" to compile stuff, I mean a l o n g t i m e. :) I recently installed Gentoo on a PIII 500 w/ 128MB of RAM. Compiling X and KDE 3 took over 10 hours to complete. Kernel compiles take (I think) 30 minutes or so to complete.

Other folks installing on slower machines have reported X/KDE compile times of over 24 hours.

Just to set your expecations about how long things should take.

I'm not talking about how long it takes

Just if is too difficult for someone that never before installed linux "with hands" ( redhat does all by it self )

Many Thanks

Gentoo isn't the easiest distro to install, but it's also not the hardest. Additionally, the Installation Instructions are quite thorough.

You will likely run into a snag or two, especially if you're using unusual hardware. However, these forums are pretty good for resolving any issues that you run into.

Plus, once you get all done and have a brand-new Gentoo system sitting on your desk, you'll have a great sense of accomplishment. :) (as well as a pretty good understanding of how Linux works)

How can i be sure that the network is running?
I configured the eth0:
ifconfig my_ip_here netmask 255.255.255.0
then:
/sbin/ifconfig -a
and the result shows that eth0 is configured with ip and netmask but i wasn't found the lines: UP and RUNNING as discribed in documents
Thanks

Well, try pinging it from your other computer. Though if you don't have the "UP" and "RUNNING" words in your ifconfig, I'd say you may have a problem.

Did you compile support for your NIC into the kernel?

Actually, I got a bit ahead of myself -- you're not at that point in the installation yet.

You should have the Installation Instructions up in front of you while you're doing the install. Assuming you do, reference "3. Load Kernel Modules". That explains how you get your NIC module loaded. Do you know what kind of NIC you have in your computer?

Even i've printed it...
these are my steps:
1) modprobe eepro100 (and there was now error response.)
2) ifconfig eth0 my_ip netmask 255.255.255.0
3) route add -net default gw my_gateway netmask 0.0.0.0 metric 1
4) added the dns on resolv.conf
5) ifconfig -a ( i don't see the UP and RUNNING lines )

Ops...
It shows "eth0" and "eth1" but only for eth1 i saw the lines UP and RUNNING.
The problem is:
I have 2 netcards so how i'll remove the eth1 and leave the eth0?
Thanks

Does lsmod show the module properly loaded? Also, are you sure it's an intel eepro100? I believe there are a couple intel drivers -- try "ls /lib/modules/*/kernel/drivers/net/*" and see if any others might make sense. (though of lsmod shows the module as being installed properly, it's probably the right driver)

Are they both intel eepro cards? If not, then modprobe the correct driver for your other card and that should come up as eth0.

If so, then do you need two NICs? The easiest way to get rid of eth1 is to simply remove it from your box. :)

You should have an option to disable this NIC in the BIOS.
