personally i use alsa with devfs just fine, however if you dont want to use alsa you can also use the kernel oss drivers. to activate these you need to recompile the kernel and look under sound support and find a driver for your particular card... for example my sound blaster live needs the emu10k1.o module
then, just add this modules (minus the .o) into the /etc/modules.autoload file so it gets loaded at boot time

I've tried using the kernel OSS drivers for me SB AWE32. However, it isn't working. Do I recompile the kernel without OSS drivers to use alsa?

ahhh... that might be your problem...
if you have an oss module loaded (or compiled into the kernel) the alsa stuff wont work... you need to recompile your kernel to take out the oss drivers
however just to be on the safe side, leave general sound support as a module cuz im not quite sure if its needed for the alsa drivers or not

If you have it as a module, u dont to recompile. You can just take it out of /etc/modules.*
