Do gentoo packages contain modified source code for compatibility or is their no differernce between downloading a package using emerge or downloading from the projects website.
Example: If I "emerge apache" or download from the apache website (identical versions). Is it the same thing? |

Many packages do contain changes, however minor, to improve compatibility, apply patches, etc. The gentoo-kernel is a good example of this.
*All* gentoo packages are hashed with md5 to ensure package integrity. Thus, if you download a source package from something other than a gentoo mirror, there's a decent chance the md5 hash won't match and portage will refuse to install it.

moving from installing gentoo to gentoo chat. This thread is more of a discussion topic than a support request.
