Hey, I've run into troubles with my printer, I think after the last etc-update (but everything else works fine!). Some days ago printing was no problem, now it is.
I'm using a HP LaserJet 4L on the parallel port; I've enabled parport_pc and /var/log/message says:
Code:
lp: driver loaded but no devices found

The strange thing (for me) is that I can print from the command line a test file.
The first time I installed the cups server on port 631 with the online administrator modus of cups and afterwards the printer it worked without any problem, now it shows the printer as disabled, or gives an client-error. Cupsd is running.
/dev/lp0 exists, but in the KControl Printing Manager I can't activate it (port does not exist).
If I don't get the printer work I will have to disinstall Gentoo and turn to SuSE, it's absolutely indispensable for me...
So if anybody might help me, I didn't find a solution in the forums, nor in the documentation. Thanks.

What happens when you try to print a test page or print a document from some word processor or website or whatever...?

I had a problem with cupsd once where everything seemed to be working, and I could print from the local machine, but my wife's laptop couldn't print -- the documents would be sent to the printer, but would never get printed.

It turned out that the printer was "disabled for jobs" or something like that (can't remember exact wording), and all I had to do was go to http://hostname:631 and enable it.

If you are printing from your local machine try checking whether your cups server is enabled at http://localhost:631
