|

I've just got my first Gentoo system running. Yay.
As I'm using it for a workstation, and because I haven't run a Linux desktop in quite some time, I thought I'd splash out and try some fancy new things.
The low-latency and pre-emptive kernel patches (built with the 'gentoo-sources' kernel source) sounded good, so in they went.
However, metalog is getting spammed continually with kernel messages such as "[kernel] process[pid] exited with preempt_count n", where n is anything from 1 to 30-something.
So, uh, is this bad? I've never really looked into this kind of thing before.
If so, short of rebuilding the kernel without the preempt patch enabled, can I disable it (functionality or the debug messages) with a sysctl, or perhaps get metalog (another new toy) to ignore it?
Thanks.
(Btw, apologies if this post looks like ass. X is still building, so I'm resigned to w3m for the time being...) |

This is a common problem with XFS and the Preempt Kernel. You can try to disable the preempt option. But in my case the compilation failed. So try it, if it works, great if not..
wait for the patched 2.4.19 XFS Kernel |

Also, see this thread. It seems like having both low-latency and preempt at the same time is a lose. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |
