PostPosted: Sun Feb 22, 2004 3:10 am    Post subject: Logitech QuickCam Messenger Reply with quote

I just bought a webcam, a Logitech QuickCam Messenger.

As I understand, the pwcx driver just doesn't work with the Messenger (http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/)

I'm just wondering if anyone has been able to make it work one way or another, or if you've ever met somebody who was able to. It's kinda frustrating as I thought "Hey, a logitech webcam, they look like they're supported" but the Messenger one is like one of the 3 not supported by this driver...

modprobing pwcx and then restarting hotplug sometime cause a kernel panic or other problem.

I tried googling for it but I couldn't really find anything tangible.

Thanks

Actually, I just found an answer, this seems to be what I'm looking for.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/qce-ga/

I'll try that and see if it works.

[edit] Nope, seems this particular driver only works with QuickCam EXPRESS, not Messenger. Anyone have any idea?

I looked a month ago or so, and didn't find anything. I ended up using the quickcam zoom with the usb-pwcx driver.

I had trouble getting my QuickCam Webb working. Worked when I tried the CVS drivers from qce-ga using the qc-usb driver.

You might want to try that.

Nope, doesn't work, I tried the CVS, the 0.60 and the 0.51 ebuild and none seems to work. From what I can gather of the forum for the project on sourceforge the quickcam messenger doesn't seem to be supported yet, it's such a shame (well, for me at least! ;) )

Well, if you ever find a way to make that webcam work in Linux, please by all mean post it on this forum. Other than that I still haven't found a way...

QC-USB should work flawlessly on a 2.6.10-rc3 kernel with the latest CVS. It does for me, that's what's powering my LEGO Robot's video stream to the world.

i have a camera QuickCam Messenger with VendorId:ProductId 046D:08F0

I think they just aded some new compression on this new model.... i am not sure it works (but hevent tryed yet), if not , why make a new driver???

from the README FILE of the developper:

Here is some information about the driver:

Support for Quickcam Messenger (0x046D, 0x08F0)
Support for Quickcam Communicate (0x046D, 0x08F5)
162x124, 162x248, 324x124, 324x248 resolution available
Auto exposure works (need some tuning though)
Auto shutter-control works (need some tuning though)
Compressed format is still unknown

...what id your cam ID? i bet it isn't 0x046D, 0x08F0

any i wil give a try to this kernel just to see....

I love you moa333!

It actually works!

My Quickcam Messenger IS a 046D:08F0

Code:
# lsusb | grep Logi
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 046d:08f0 Logitech, Inc.

I basically just ran the quickcam.sh script, it gave me all kind of errors but it worked nonetheless. I got it working really easily with xawtv now.

Code:
l # uname -a
Linux Sightblinder 2.6.10-gentoo-r1 #1 Mon Dec 27 10:20:54 EST 2004 i686 AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2500+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

I'm so happy I think I'm going to go make an ebuild out of this.

[edit] damn, somebody beat me to it! https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=75705 :-P

Just a small comment.

I used version 0.5, which just came out hours ago I guess ( 27-Dec-2004 14:00 )

[edit]Just tried out the ebuild with version 0.5, it works perfectly AND coldplug automatically detects and loads the module.

I dont know how to make the ebuild actualy work....

Anyway you should check you have a good kernel. I dont know what a good kernel is, but the latest gentoo-dev-sources, 2.6.9-r9 or more should work....

execute the quickcam.sh script first, ou should see there if there is any error or problem....

No problems here with the latest gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.9-r13 and the 0.5 drivers.

Do somebody use the webcam for IM? I'd like to use it like in the MSN Messenger client, with my friends that use window$, but couldn't find an app that worked in linux and window$. Gnomemeeting isn't compatible with the Netmeeting included in WindowsXP.

For voice Skype is great, but they don't support webcam yet.

Thanx in advance.

But Gnomemeeting isn't compatible with the NetMeeting included in WindowsXP so that's not a valid option. I'll try the Yahoo client. Thanx a lot! ;)

Some feedback about the driver status?

Mine worked well the first day, then i had problems going online with gnomemeeting. I mean I could see the image in gnomemeeting while not connected, but when i was calling someone he was seying nothink at all. This is strange since it worked the first day!!!

Now verssion 0.7 is out here (it says many bugs fixed), and i'm going to try it!
