|
|
I just installed Gentoo 2004.0 test.
0204 stage1, 0213 portage.
gnome 2.4.2
emerged smoothly.
1.
I start x with root once, and it prompted a dialog box asking me something about screensaver, and I choose "don't let it start again" (checked the only box and clicked ok).
Then later I startx again (the 2nd time) with root and gnome hangs at startup in "File manager" at splash screen.
2.
How to make a common user (no root) able to use gnome?
user***@local $ ls -a ->>>> nothing.
and startx --->> ".Xauthority" not exists
I add this user using #adduser user***
Thanks.
Regards
Huang Bo

well, for 1, I waited for a bit longer then I found gnome started. It seems too too long. (1min).
and for 2, i created .Xauthority for user***, and it warns no more, but when i use this user to startx, the x doesn't want to start and quit. (some permission denied message, but not .Xauthority...)
Maybe it helps.

one problem that i encountered is that in order to start x, you need to own your home directory. Log into root, go to /home (where all of the home directories should be) and use
this will show the owner of all of the files and directories. if the user is not the owner, then use
Code: | chown username:goupname(probably user) directoryname -R |
this will make that directory and all files and folders in it owned by that user. after you have done this, log out, log in with your user, and start up x. |

The screensaver message is probably because you haven't installed 'xscreensaver'
Also check the permissions on the /tmp directory, should be 777 with a sticky bit. If /tmp is a seperate mount it might not be. |
