I thinking of eliminating devfs to cure some problems with my Laptops DVD/CDRW combo drive. Mainly DVD playback problems, I've already compiled scsi emulation and dma into my kernel, and edited my devfsd.conf file(to try to use hdparm by mapping my cdrom to hd*). Ogle video and audio stutters really bad, Xine has some audio drop outs and Mplayer plays audio fine but has a little video stutter. My main reason for doing this would be so that hdparm would have an affect on the performance of my combo drive even though it is scsi emulated. So would it do more harm than good by bypassing devfs?

Search the forums on how to enable DMA on drives that use SCSI-emulation.
Perhaps you will find an answer in there, this subject has been discussed many times before.
I wouldn't advise to disable devfs, since it can save you from a lot more trouble. |
