Hi,
I'm sitting here, trying to install my X, but the qt-3.0.3.1.tar.bz2 seems to be deleted from all (!!) servers.
And QT 3.0.3-r1 won't compile against libpng 1.2.2 (don't know why, but it gets many libpng errors)
What should I do????
Many greetings from Germany,

I saw qt-3.0.3.1 is masked (in /usr/portage/profiles/packages.mask). Look like there are some problems. The libpng 1.2.2 is also masked.
Use command: "emerge -s package_name" (e.g emerge libpng) to see what is current version is available. Also take a look at file packages.mask above to see why the packages is masked. |

Don't unmask libpng-1.2.2 it has caused alot of people extreme problems including myself, use libpng-1.2.1 for now. Seemant told me last night on #gentoo he was going to remove it from portage to keep people from borking there system _________________ This message self destructed a long time ago. |

What sort of problems are occuring with this setup? I currently have libpng1.2.2 and qt3.0.3.1 (compiled last night) installed and everything is working without any problems...

Hello out there!
I did nothing but what's written in the install docs. No USE-Parameters and no maskings. After the basic install, I decided to build kde. But emerge stopped at qt3-libs. (See thread about KDE in this forum)
now I wanted to bulid
apache => same
PHP => same
Gnome => error with libpng
so what the hell do I do with my computer if I cannot install any useful application on it? Will this Bug be fixed? emerge clean && emerge rsync doesn't do anything. I have all newest ebuilds. (emerge tells me)
cu, Bernd
ps: I'm from germany an if someone's interested: none of the german ibiblio-mirrors is up! |

Well i have the same problems,
i unmerged now the libpng 1.2.2 and try again, if that does not help i will unmegre kde and then emerge again.
last week I have installed gen2 at work and had not such probs.
maybe we just have to wait some more days and it will fixed, maybe |

I hope so. It really sucks beeing a nearly newbie to linux and then having so much trouble while installation. I love console-working, but having neither apache not tex nor even samba (My other Computer is running Windows) isn't funny any more.
I'll do an emerge world this weekend and then triy to install KDE next week.
Compiling is a pain on my K6. That's the reason why I'm trying gentoo, hope that runs a little bit faster than debian...

I have an k6 as well. Its not a pain having a K6, but is a pain , if youhave a lot for compile and satrt over and over again, because the basic install just stops
. while having a faster cpu , it would not let me wait so long for the result.
but anyway i just can say that the compiling is worth once all is running fine
And besides i just think its good for learning to install several times.
I remembr the old M$ days for installing Win... over and over for getting experiences.

Okay, your're right about windows. I never installed Windows 98 without getting a bluescreen during installation .
But sitting here, building tetex / apache / kde / qt or something like that and being unable to do anything against the compiler error is frustrating. And on my K6-Laptop it takes about 2 h 'till the failure comes up.
But now I'm happy having smbmount installed successfully!

Okay, I'll try.
I did a emerge unmerge libpng
then (to get safe) I erased the portage-folder for libpng.
after that, I emerge rsync-ed and emerge loaded some files.
Now building is in progress. I'll post my results after emerge has done. This will be tomorrow, I suppose. (Remember Germany, CEST)

Yeah, it's still running!! Seems like qt3 is over now and emerge is building other parts of KDE. (Filenames start with "k" instead of "q" )
Maybe it was not so intelligent to do an emerge kde gnome php mysl?
It just runs for now and I think for about the whole weekend...
So if anyone has still this problem with building qt3, do as described and unmerge libpng-1.2.2!!

Code: |
#emerge -C libpng
#emerge =/libpng-1.2.1-r1
#emerge kde
|
that should be the command to force to emerge the older version of libpng, qt 3.0.3.1 works fine with that.
if not, try to find out the right libpng filename, maybe i made a mistake, i am in school here... don't have my ports by hand.
I hope i could help you
