|
|
I'm looking at an Ultra 2, dual 200Mhz...with no memory for a cheap prices. I've seen lots of memory on eBay for the ultra 5/10....will this work in the Ultra 2 box or does it require special memory?
I'm looking to turn this or whatever good Sun box I can find on a deal into a Gentoo box. What's a good price to pay for say an Ultra 2 (2x200 or 2x300)....and Ultra 5/10? How much for keyboard/mouse....19" or 20" monitor?
Thanks in advance!!

1. For U2 memory, the search "(5013136, 501-3136, X7004A)" in
computers worked for me on eBay. Don't forget that on U2, you have to add
memory in pairs. Expect to pay around $120 for 512MB. (4x128)
2. Keyboards & mice are cheap.
3. CPUs are not cheap. (Although I've never priced 200MHz). 400MHz for
U2 are between $200-$300 last I looked. 2x300MHz makes a nice system.
4. Sun monitors are not too expensive, but they are so heavy that
shipping costs are more that the monitor price. I am also using a
Samsung 171v (LCD) which ships for very little, but costs more.
All pricing assumes eBay or the comp.sys.sun.wanted news group or
similar source of used equipment. |

Thanx for the reply!! One last thing...
If I get an ultra 2 with 300 mhz chip(s)....can I upgrade it myself to twin 400's by just buying them and plugging them in or does this require a different box/motherboard? _________________ Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak......... |

Check the documentation (look under http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Devices/CPU_Module/UltraSPARC_400MHz_UltraII.html
)
The 400MHz CPUs require a certain main board revision or better.
If you have such a board, then it's just a CPU swap, but you must do it in
pairs, and there is one jumper switch you have to change. (All that takes is
tweezers or long-nosed pliers and a steady hand. Aks me how I know the
steady hand part.)
If you need to upgrade the main board, they go for not much on eBay.
The CPU upgrades cost much more (we are not talking chips; a CPU
module is 1x2x4 (inches), say. You can probably get one for $200-250.)
Given the choice between U2 (2x300) or U2 (1x400), I think the dual
processor with the slower CPUs is a nicer system.
(I have U2 (2x300), U2 (2x400), and U60 (2x450). Subjectively, the
performance gain seems to be with the U60, without not that much difference between the two U2s. But that's at 3 or 4 times the price.) |

But don't take my word for the performance feel. I am sure about the
main board model stuff and the size of a CPU module. Everything else
is a guess based on my own experience.) |
