Isn't there already a program that does this? I am thinking of Gnu Info. You wouldn't have to write the docs in texinfo format. You could write them in DocBook XML. There are existing filter that convert DocBook to texinfo, html, man pages, et cetera. _________________ The Porthole Portage Frontend |

I'd propose a set of test issues for this thing:
- Can it adequately work both offline and on the web?
- Does it have a user-friendly search engine? (Think Google).
- Is it portable (both text and gui allowed, etc.)
- Does it have internationalization support?
- Is its default (you'd be suprised how many people stick to defaults) user-friendly?
- Is it non-patronizing (M$ help, for example, is very patronizing)?
- Is it able to give the right info to the right people? (a newbie, recoganized by his choices, would get the GUI tools, with a link to the config files, and a guy with more experience would get the config files document, and a link to the GUI).
- Is it extensible?
- Can it be appended to by all those who can do so? (prob. a system like the ebuilds)
This list, of course, is not complete, but should help in laying down a roadmap.
Of course, this means that I'm volunteering! |
