|
|
I think I sent grub to the wrong drive, I put it in the mbr on the D drive (gentoo drive). I have Windows XP on my C Drive. So I decided to change my bios to boot from the D drive first. When I did this the word GRUB scrolled across the screen nonstop and that's all that happened. Do I have to reinstall gentoo to fix this? Are there any steps I can use to correct this using maybe the gentoo install CD? Help! |

hmmm I'm not an expert at this, but I think that if you select your D drive in the bios to be your "first boot disk", linux will take it as being hda, instead of say, hdc. You should be able to boot from your Gentoo-Linux CD, mount your boot partition and edit /boot/grub/menu.lst so that it corresponds to the correct settings.
In case that doesn't work, you can still revert to the original settings, chroot to your gentoo system using the Install CD, and install GRUB to your first disk's MBR or a floppy disk.
Anyway I'm quite sure there is no need to start an installation from scratch. _________________ Hello. |

Hmm tried what you suggested and got the same results... I'm going to try getting it to work with the NT boot loader. |

Can't do the NT bootloader method because I can't mount the floppy when booted in the CDrom, so the only choice is grub, and no matter what I do all it does is scrolls GRUB across the screen... my config goes like this..
Code: |
default 0
timeout 30
splashimage=(hd1,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title=Windows XP
root (hd0,5)
chainloader +1
title=Gentoo Linux
root (hd1,0)
kernel /boot/bzImage root=/dev/hdb3

anyone see anything wrong? |

Are the drives still logically switched in the BIOS? Have you tried reinstalling GRUB since you swapped the drives? hd1 might now be hd0. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Aha I think I might have messed up fstab. If I messed it up it logically couldn't boot the drives due to the fact they aren't loaded... Brb I'm going to try to edit fstab. |

Well I fixed fstab and corrected those errors, but when I boot the D drive first in the bios it just scrolls GRUB... I dont think the HDDs switched around either, but I'll try renaming them like you suggested.
Edit: rac I tried what you suggested and got the same results... Cmon someone please help me out, I really want to get linux running.
Update on the problem. When booting my D drive, the one with linux installed on it, grub doesn't load but just keeps repeating GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB... no splash screen nothing.. |

Just curious, did you try putting grub on a floppy like ManuChao suggested? It might help you determine if the problem is in your grub configuration or your grub installation. (Although I do find it very unlikely that the problem would be in the configuration)
Good luck |
