Hi, as much as I would LOVE to have tried an athlon64 box, I haven't yet.

but here is what I do know:

get your livecd and stages from here:

ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo/experimental/amd64/

if you are using sata, it has promise 20378, which I believe is supported as a scsi drive under 2.6x kernels.

same with via.

I don't know what gcc versino to use, nor what CFLAGS to use.. perhaps k8, but if you use latest gcc, or gcc 3.4, then there may be specific a64 flags..

other than that, it is a via mainboard, so the usual stuff..

good luck! and post your results :D

The live cd's are in the mirrors, under experimental. I just followed the x86 installation guide, but you have to emerge grub-static, and I don't know that genkernel works.

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=122698 has a bunch of stuff on installing on AMD64, and http://dev.gentoo.org/~brad_mssw/amd64-tech-notes.html has stuff. Give that a look and good luck.
