My brand new Gentoo installation just had a little "accident".
Seems that when I was working in webmin adding a user (for Samba use, no home directory etc.) things took a terrible turn. I found that I wasn't satisfied with the new user so I deleted the account through webmin.

A while later I returned to my SSH session that was logged on at the same time and ran a PS AUX to check what services that was running. Imagine the face I made when all the system services normally run by root was run by #0. This can't be good, I thought and tried to log into Webmin again. This time webmin claimed that user root could not be found. So I tried to re-login through SSH and got a similar response; user root not found!! 8O

How the heck could that happen!?!? :?

My normal user account is still there though and I can still log in with it.

So you can't ssh as your normal user and then 'su -' to root?

Did you delete the 'root' user by any chance?

Does booting in single-user mode help? Add "single" to the kernel parameters at boot time in your bootloader.

Can you boot from the Gentoo ISO CD, and mount your partition to be able to change the /etc/passwd ?

During the forum down time some interesting stuff happened... :D
I was still able to log on to Webmin and with it recreate the root account.
It seems like everything is working the way it should.
The only thing is that the alias ls --color seems to be gone. Wasn't there a file where you could set this alias on a global basis?
I just can't remember wich one it is...

Anyways, thanx for all help!

Edit: Never mind! I found the file! (/etc/profile.env) :D

Try a search for 'alias' and 'color'.

Hmmm, well... since I was able to fix the mistake on my own, you may still be eligible for the title!
