First, the disclaimer: I am still learning linux, so I am probably not at the level that 90% of you are here, so bear with me.

I installed linux on a sparc box with (I THINK!) an elite video card. For the life of my I cannot start X. My goal is to be able to connect to X through x-win32 or exceem on my other desktop. I don't really need to display anything through the video card on the box.

I have tried just about every xorg.conf I have seen in these forms. I always receive something close to this error:

Quote:
(II) SUNFFB: driver for Creator, Creator 3D and Elite 3D
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:01:0
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

That to me looks like I may not even have that card? I took the card out and it said wildcat on it, but that looks like it is just the chipset. Is there any way I can determine exactly what I have? I am posting my current xorg.conf and log file now.

I should also add that solaris runs beautifully on it, but I would rather have gentoo.

If the card is an Expert 3D like the topic says, there is no linux support for it at this time.

If it's an Elite 3D, then you'll want to look at emerging afbinit and also check out Ferris's Developer Page where it talks about getting the microcode to run afbinit with.

If you want help figuring out which one you have, then post the output of lspci (may need to emerge pciutils).

Crap.

The title is the actual name on the front of the sun box. After doing some research, it appears I have an Expert3D-Lite card. It also appears I am SOL for X.

If you'll only be running the X-server remotely then there's no reason to even configure it on the machine. The remote machine will be running X with it's own config.

Yes. If all you want to do is connect to your machine remotely, all you need to do is install X on it. The remote system's video card, etc. is what matters.
(I routinely connect to an xterm on an SS20 which is not actually running X).

Will there ever be support for the Expert 3D or the Expert3D-Lite?
Will the release of the source code of Solaris be any use?

It's currently not planned, because there is no documentation available for the card. That said, it is not impossible that having solaris source might change that. Required would be:
(1) all the Expert-related source in some intelligible form;
(2) Someone with an Expert video card and sparc linux;
(3) And the time and inclination to work on a driver for it.

Sun does use some form of X11R6, I believe, which means that the X/Expert driver interface might already be in place. So the effort would be a matter of how much OS support is needed, how the driver gets at it, and what kernel support might be needed.

None of that can be estimated a priori, unfortunately.
