Sound on dell inspiron 500m

I recently moved from Mandrake 9.2 to the latest release of gentoo. My sound card worked absolutely fine with mandrake, however ever since I have moved to gentoo, although I get perfect sound from the laptop speakers, I get no sound at all whenever I plug in my headphones or the speaker system into the audio out port on the sound card. Please advise.

Might want to check out your levels with alsamixer, make sure that don't have anything muted that shouldn't be.
