when I was part of a clan, they all wanted to use roger wilco but I told them flat out that I cannot and will not run that. ICQ/AIM/Yahoo Messenger/Jabber/IRC, god.. how many more different forms of communication do you really need?

I know I'm gonna sound like an idiot, but how the hell do you run quake3 with a mod ? I've setup urban terror to go, but guess I need a command to tell quake3 to load the mod ... half life is easy :) I'm sure q3 is too ;)

I don't play quake3 at all, but thought I'd try this mod out :)

BTW your ebuild script defaults to /opt/quake3, but I bought the linux version of quake3 ages ago, and it installs to /usr/local/games/quake3/ by default - no hassle, I just edited the ebuild script - but others might like to know.

Yes, my ebuild defaults there. But that's only because quake3 ebuild defaults there too, and my ebuild depends on it.

Ah an urban terror ebuild hehe :)

The quake3 ebuild has to install to /opt. It's gentoo policy that packages which only offer binaries go into /opt, so I put it there (I made the q3 ebuild). /usr/local is out of option as well as it is for what the name suggests, for local installations the admin makes himself, no distribution package is allowed to install to /usr/local (see the FHS).

A mod is nothing more than a directory under your quake3 directory that contains the mod. (it's usually a tar.gz file you download)
then, when your in quake3, go to "mods" and you have your selection!

Well, I'm not sure if it'll work with the demo version of quake3. I have the CD, so what I did was download the ID binaries (from www.idsoftware.com), smack the badboys onto disk, then copied over my *.pk3 files from the cd to the harddrive.

UT is kinda odd, you have to first install the available mod they have, then PATCH it with an available update on their website. (I was running circles for a while until I found this out)
If you don't then you'll get an error everytime you try to connect to a server saying something cryptic about not being the right version.

Give it a try!

I used to like Q3UT, but after version 2.4 it became too much like Counter-Strike.

The laser pointer effects are pretty neat, though :)

I'm having no luck with this whole quake3 thing

I install quake3 from my linux version cd to /opt/quake3 (bin folder /usr/local/bin)

I can run it no problems.

after I emerge quake3 (the update) I can't run quake3 anymore - it says permission denied, even with everyone read AND write access.

So once again I am foiled in my attemp to play friggin urban terror.

can someone tell my where I stuffed it all up ? or how to get it going

much, much appreciated!

seems it's the permissions from the ebuild that stuffed it.

runs as root fine

I'll fiddle with them.

the god damn urban terror had better be there

;)

As easy as emerging my ebuild. Read back in this thread for more info about it. It isn't still in portage cause freeze for 1.4 (no new ebuilds accepted until 1.4 a developer told me...)

A lot of people tried it with no problems. It seems the problem isn't related to my ebuild, cause if you check my ebuild you will see it only creates a new directory (/opt/quake3/q3ut2), unpacks urban terror, gives the right permissions and moves urban terror there:
Code:

src_unpack()
{
        unzip ${DISTDIR}/beta24_full.zip > /dev/null
        unzip ${DISTDIR}/beta25_upgrade.zip > /dev/null
}

src_compile ()
{
        chown -R root.games ${WORKDIR}/
        find ${WORKDIR}/ -type d -print0 | xargs --null chmod 755
        find ${WORKDIR}/ -type f -print0 | xargs --null chmod 744
}

src_install()
{
        dodir /opt/quake3
        dodir /opt/quake3/q3ut2
        mv ${WORKDIR}/* ${D}/opt/quake3/q3ut2/
}

It isn't still in portage cause no new ports are accepted until Gentoo 1.4 release.

Sincerely i've got no idea. I always play online, and when I connect a server with xqf Quake3 detects it is a Urban Terror game and loads the mod automatically. You always have the MODS menu ;). (Yeah, I hate that too, but I don't know any other procedure, tell me if you find out one)

sorry - your ebuild works fine - it's the quake3 update that causes the permissions error.

anyone have any ideas why ? perhaps the dude who wrote the script ?

ta

still waiting to play!!! :(

Well I wrote the original ebuild for quake3 and there were some permission problems but that should have been fixed by now but I don't really know if somebody changed the ebuild again ...

Have you just added yourself to the games group and then it started working ? If that's the case I must say, RTFM or better read the f* notice the ebuild prints out :) I clearly state that users have to be in the games group. (though at least in early versions of the ebuild that I have here the permissions grant everyone the right to play q3).

If you say you changed the permissions then what were the permissions like before you changed them and to what did you change them ?

Just thought I'd mention that you can also install mods, put custom cfg files etc in your ~/.q3a drectory. Quake3 automatically looks there for the stuff if it exists and it keeps the rest of the filesystem clean.

Either way :)

Cheers!
Arker.

I can do it again, but I added myself to the games group, changed the permissions to read write everyone, and re-logged in.

still didn't work

tried the next day it was ok :)

so .. not sure what it was - but you're right, I shoulda read the f'in notice in the ebuild :)

i dont really see the necessity (other than ultra-convienence) of emerging quake 3. you can just download the latest linux patch, install it, then copy the pak0.pk3 file on the cd into /usr/local/games/quake3/baseq3. thats what i did and it worked fine. Also, isn't installing mods just unzipping them into a mod directory, i dont think you have to do anything to them.

P.S. im running urban terror 2.4 fine, as well as counterstrike (unfortunately you cant play in secure servers).

I suggest adding the substring "Gentoo" into xqf's player highlight feature, and adding "Gentoo" somewhere in your Urban Terror nickname.

Then Gentoo players would be able to identify between themselves, and to play together against windows losers ;)
