For the second occaision, I now have sound working. For the second occaision, I have no idea how :D. After many hours over many days, I finally checked physical connections. Apparently a gremlin (or one of my cats) decided to just barely pull out the 9 pin din connector from the subwoofer. It looked plugged in, but it wasn't. Who knows how much uneccessary work I did

Ahh the stories I've heard about animals and hardware, you would be amazed what you hear doing tech support or if you do you know what I mean.

I have done support :D I should have known better really. Timing was the culprit here. Sound was working until I started messing with fixing the 'ALSA is already loaded' (or similar message) that I got at boot. I think I had emerged alsa again which broke sound. Sometime between then and checking, it became loose.

Example:

This comes from a call I heard while working for RoadRunner, this lady had called in several times about her cable modem ceasing to function. We replaced it a total of three times only to find out that this ladys cat fell in love with the warmth coming from her Surfboard and decided to knock it over an lay on it all day. She knew about this the whole time and on the third replacement finally told the tech about it and asked was this a bad thing.

.: Another problem solved

 Thats a good one.

My cable modem died due to heat on the connections outside the building. Was fine all night long. Around 9am ish, I'd start losing link. Then, I'd not be able to keep one until around 5pm ish. Replacing the modem didn't help. They eventually switched the connection in the back to make it 'similar' to others in the building that had cable modems. I forget exactly what was different. Odd things happen.

In another instance, I knew someone who had problems with a network crashing (not the server) around 11:30am every day. I think he said it took a couple of weeks to track it down to a professor with a microwave in his office. Whenever he heated his lunch in the microwave, the microwaves apparently interfered with the cabling in the wall behind the microwave. After 2-3 minutes, the network was fine. The 2-3 minute duration was what made it difficult to track.

A very interesting field :D
