A few minutes ago I finally decided to not only update my system, but the world. So I ran "emerge -u world", but surprisingly there are no updates for KDE. However, when I run "emerge -u kde" there is a huge list of updates. What is wrong here? Shouldn't "emerge -u world" also update KDE? |

the updates that are listed when you do a 'emerge -u kde' won't appear when you do a 'emerge -u world' if they were compiled as dependencies for something else.
if you do this:
you will see them all listed.
(the -D stands for deep...read the man page for details of all the options)
hope this helps |

I've tried that before and the KDE packages still don't show up. I've looked in the /var/cache/edb/world file and it is empty. Shouldn't the names of all the packages I installed be in there? |

I decided to edit the /var/cache/edb/world file and add "kde". Now when I do an "emerge -up world" it lists all the updates for KDE. Having solved that problem, I still have a question! Why was KDE not in my world file in the first place? I added KDE, but probably I've installed some other packages that need to be updated. What happened to my world file that suddenly made it empty? I need to know which other packages I should update! |

I forgot to ask, can some people post their world files so I can see if yours is also empty or if it was only mine! Thank you very much! |

As something obviously has gone wrong simply run regenworld as root to update your worldfile.

ralph,
You are simply the BEST! I'm going to spend a whole paragraph now talking about how GREAT you are! You don't know how much you helped me. I was getting really frustrated with the "emerge -u world" and afraid that I would never get my whole system back up to date (I wouldn't have been able to remember all the packages that belong in the world file). So you made my day! I'm going to take this oppurtunity to praise you, the forum and Gentoo as a whole! The community is really great and, as this example proves, VERY HELPFUL! Once again, THANK YOU ralph! I thought this question would go unanswered! |
