Have an ultra 5, plugged keyboard and mouse and my monitor in, turned on, no monitor output. since the highest res my monitor can do is 1024x768 (cheap 15" tft) not suprised, but since i can type booted off the cd and set it all up via ssh. reboot, and not sure what it is doing because obviously no monitor output but doesn't seem to boot. need to work out how to change the resolution so i can get some output, so i can see what it's doing and debug.

purchased a null modem cable, hooked it up between ultra 5 and gentoo pc box, run various serial console programs but no output. dunno if it's the setting i am using but can't get it to give me any output at all. any suggestions, maybe a step by step, listing key presses, instruction how to change the resolution to 1024x768 60 Hz without being able to see what you are typing, or any suggestions what i might have gotten wrong with my null modem setup.

I think this should work... Boot, repeatedly hit stop-a for a few minutes, hit enter a few times, setenv output-device screen:r1024x768x60 enter reset-all enter

Have you tried a stop-N boot? Uh, also, it's probably "reset", not "reset-all"...

I think it was "reset-all" and "Stop+A." This machine worked (briefly) on my mother's monitor before I got this 20E20. I think I fscked something up or removed the wrong jumper or something, because I never had a problem until I tried to upgrade the PROM -- as soon as I removed that jumper, nothing has worked. I replaced it, but nothing worked :-/

Bah. Still trying.

EDIT:
Machine does not seem to respond to keyboard... hmm... as in, I typed what you said and reset-all (and even reset, for good measure), but the SCSI drives didn't spin or anything. This would seem to indicate that the keyboard port is bad, neh? And with the monitor and serial consoles not doing shit either, it seems like I've fried my motherboard. Or something. All power supplies are in the right place...

Is this a sun keyboard? And do you have an openboot prom manual,
which you can download from <http://docs.sun.com/db?q=openboot&s=t>
(you probably want the command manual or quick reference manual for
3.x)?

If you have a sun keyboard plugged in, after you power on, after a bit the
keyboard lights should flash: this means the prom is going through an
internal test sequence before bringing the system up.

Here, "a bit" might be as long as 30 seconds or a minute (at least, when
I am impatient it seems that long, but it's probably less).

If nothing ever happens, the next easiest thing to try is to unplug the keyboard
and monitor and plug in a serial terminal directly.

By the way, I always run with
Code:

setenv auto-boot? false

(where this is an OpenBoot command which says always to come up to
the "ok" prompt after a power-on. It makes troubleshooting this sort
of problem a lot easier. )

Ctrl-Break is needed in some instances (Serial consoles, or non-sun keyboards)
