I have an Athlon 64 3000+ and MSI K8t motherboard. I have previously installed Gentoo 32 bit from stage 3. I tried both the most recent (December I think) live CD and a Knoppix Stage 3 install for AMD64 but have had the same problems both times. First my /etc/make.conf file only has 4 or 5 lines in it by default, I know in 32 bit install it was much larger. Secondly many programs I try to emerge are masked, grub, lilo, and some (not all) of the kernel loggers. Third I emerged genkernel, but never could get it to work, I installed the kernel with menuconfig, make etc... Am I doing something wrong, or does it just take amuch more advanced user to install the 64 bit gentoo?

1. Please post your make.conf. Or maybe you can find a line where there is something about a catalyst. This is a new tool used to create the stage tarballs, but it is only is on the most recent stages. Then there is no problem with the "short" make.conf.
2. When did you last time do "emerge sync" or get a "portage snapshot"? When I do an emerge -p lilo grub, everthing is okay.
With the third problem, I sorrily can't help you, case I don't use genkernel.
Good Luck.

1. copy /etc/make.conf.example over to /etc/make.conf and it should contain all stuff.

2. Genkernel doesn't work with 2.6 kernel and other architectures than x86

@robb: You have to boot with a 64 Bit kernel to use amd64 stages, else you will get 'invalid format' errors. I don't know which kernel to use - 2.6.1 should give you extended hardware support, but some people say that 2.4 would perform better with x86_64. Just try for yourself.

My make.conf:
Quote:
cat /etc/make.conf
# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically built this stage
CFLAGS="-O3 -pipe -mmmx -m3dnow -msse -mfpmath=sse,387 -m64"
CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu"
USE="X kde alsa qt gtk2 mozilla ssh -gnome qtmt"
CXXFLAGS="$CFLAGS"
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64 ~amd64"
PORTDIR_OVERLAY=/usr/local/portage

Certain packages (like kde-3.2.0_beta2) can be emerged using ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64 ¨amd64 ~x86 x86", but use this with caution.
You have to emerge grub-static to use with x86_64 architecture, grub won't compile.
