PPP still refuses to work

Same problem still remains, modem works - it connects to isp but when there should be authenetication, ppp-daemon dies. Kppp gives error #1. I installed Gentoo 1.2 with broadband Internet connection (eth0). I've typed rc-update del net.eth0 default and rc-update add net.ppp0 default. The modem connection worked on Mandrake 8.2 .

kppp has always been kind of shaky for me. I often have to try connecting 2-4 times before it'll finally create a successful ppp connection. Try using wvdial instead and see if you have any better results.
