Ok, i just installed the 2.4.22 kernel, I emerged again the nvidia-kernel & nvidia-glx, and too bad for me i can't log in correctly.
When i type gdm in a shell, xfree starts, i see the nvidia logo, and poof, it dies, it tries to start and it dies again untill i get a charming blue screen telling me that the x-server cannot start.

Here is the server output:

Fatal server errror:
xf86OpenConsole : Cannot open virtual console 7 (Input/output error)

I really don't understand what it means... 8O

Have you enabled VC support in the kernel ?
Enabled devfs support AND DISabled devpts support ?

The Gentoo docs specifically recommend this.

Mmmm...i'm not sure about all this...what do you mean about VC support?
Anyway, devfs is enabled and devpts is disabled.

Well, i recompiled carefully my kernel, a 2.4.22, and i still have this ####### error, i tried to use a former version of the nvidia-kernel & glx, the 4496...and it's still shitty...
I put nvagp=1 in my xf86config file cause i readed somewhere the new nvidias are not compatible with agpart...

What the #### about all this, i just don't understand what's wrong, my kernel seems to be ok, i never had any problem with the 2.4.20" kernel and xfreee...plus i don't find any serious tips on google about this stuff, "Fatal server errror:
xf86OpenConsole : Cannot open virtual console 7 (Input/output error) "

The 4496 nvidia drivers are not older, they are the current stable drivers for gentoo.
You can only have newer drivers if you ARCH "~x86".
If you do not get that then you are out of your depth.

I advise you to move your fscking elsewhere.

One another thing i don't understand.
When i do a "startx" everything starts normally, and when it's gdm, it doesn't work.
When it's startx, it says me "using vt7"...

So why that damn gdm fails????!

Daaaaah

Anyway, with the both versions of the driver, it doesn't work, at least it doesn't work when i try to launch GDM, when it's just startx, it works.
And yes, my make.conf file is "ARCH'ed with x86"

Well,as i didn't see any solution, i desinstalled both xfree and the nvidia stuff, i deleted the configuration files of these packages in /etc, and i reemerged the whole thing...it works...so my problem came from these config files i guess so.

One thing is boring about gentoo, or half boring, it's that when you updates the packages, it keeps your old config files untill you update them with etc-update...if you do it each time, it's okay, but if you're not careful or if you're lazy you finish to have a lot of config files to update.

So is there any way to update easily the config files, keeping your settings, and updating them if necessary? Any tip?
