You can add AUTOCLEAN="yes" to /etc/make.conf to have emerge automatically remove old versions when installing new ones. _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Please don't do that. You will be unhappy. Read the section of the emerge man page about the unmerge command. It begins with "WARNING" for a reason. unmerge removes the package you have just so carefully installed.
You are probably talking about "clean" rather than "unmerge", which only removes superseded packages. You don't have to run "clean" every time you merge new software either. You can if you want to, or you can just do it every once in a while, or not at all. The only thing not running it at all will cost you is disk space. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

What about updating etc? when i emerge something, sometimes it says IMPORTANT: files in etc needs updating.
I know how to do this, emerge gentoolkit and run etc-update. but is it safe to just go ahead and run etc-update and pick 1 to replace the files whenever gentoo tells me i have to update etc?? |

You should read the file thats going to be replacing the old one, And make sure you want the change, or not. Sometimes things like make.conf will get updated, but it'll erase all your use variables and flags. |

There's really no right answer to this. You could see this and this for a bit more background. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |
