I upgraded from gcc 3.1 to gcc 3.2 about a month ago. I did not re-bootstap or emerge -e world and everything works fine.
Are the problems only arising from people upgrading from 2.x to 3.2? |

Is anyone still posting here... Could someone please explain the dependancy relation ship of glibc and gcc....should I reinstall glib or gcc first or do a see-saw thing where I compiling one then the other then the first one? _________________ Travel, without movement. |

It is safe to do this upgrade on running system? Will the old libraries be left in and new ones made with a new major version number? |

Well, I tried to update my system. I already had 3.2(.2) for a while but I thought it would be nice if everything was compiled with 3.2(.2).
So I read the instructions from carpaski (something like that.....) and downloaded the scripts and ran them. But script 2 doesn't work for me. It stops with th following error:
Code: |
python2.2: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
|
Indeed that file no longer exsists. What should I do? Is there some way to extract the tar-ball the first script made and will everything be fine?? Is there some way to continue? Or do I have to start with a new install? If so, what files should I save in order to have the same setup? I came up with: world, make.conf, my mailbox and the kernel options....
Please help
[edit]
Well, I found the tarballs in '/usr/portage/packages/All'. I untarred them into '/' and I could use KDE after that. Some of the files weren't extracted properly because of something with EOF. After that emerge still complained it couldn't find 'libstdc++.so.5', but it was present on the system. I located it using 'locate libstdc++.so.5'. After that I did 'export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/PATH_TO_LIBSTDC++.SO.5:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH'. Now I could do an 'emerge rsync'. But only in that console window. After some additional reading I found '/etc/env.d/05gcc', there was the LD_PATH mentioned also (didn't alter anything, just thought it might help some people in the future...). Right now I'm compiling binutils and gcc as a precaution. I hope than everything is just fine. At least it gives me time to think of files I want to keep in case I am going to do a clean install.
More files I'd like to keep (again, may help others too)
world
make.conf
mailbox
kernel options
grub menu.lst
fstab
'that md.... file'
XF86Config
devfsd.conf
timeslicing patch (for AC kernel)

Went back to the Gentoo Installation Doc:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-install.xml
Saw that what first happens is that binutils, gcc, gettext and glibc are
compiled/installed, then, again, binutils, gcc, and gettext. (makes sense)
My most recent sync showed gcc-3.2.2-r2 available. Did a:
emerge -uvp gcc and both
binutils-2.13.90.0.20
gcc-3.2.2-r2
were to be "U"'ed, in that order.
So now I am doing "emerge -uv gcc" so as to have both upgraded. (in that order)
Kind of the chicken/egg, eh? Excuse, very late for me, and lots of sendmails to patch.
Hope this helps, is correct, and understandable. Guess no one answered because we're the only ones that were initially stymied by this....
Oh, gcc is still compiling as I write, I will return if it foo-bars. |

I have the same issue... I followed the How-to Upgrade under User Docs and received that same message.
Did you figure that out, curious.
