I cannot get screencasting to work. It results in an error --
| Code: | | Failed to export video: Temporary file URL must be an existing local file |
After the recording is complete.
pipewire is working, I could not find any error message as such from it, neither from any KDE daemon except for --
| Code: | | Kwin_core: Cannot grant a token to KWin::ClientConnection |
Which probably is not the issue.
In case your screencasting is working (see the recording tab in spectacle), could you please share your USE flag configuration as such --

I don't think this is likely to be a Gentoo specific issue. Multiple bug reports detailing a similar or identical error have been filed. I would recommend sifting through bug reports to see if any of it is insightful or helpful. Some of the solutions and workarounds that worked for individuals can be helpful in troubleshooting, even if to just get an understanding of what does and does not have an affect on your problem.

If none of that is helpful, file your own bug report. The KDE dev team is very active and responsive. I have filed bug reports and they were always addressed in a timely manner. |

This feature is working in those neon live USBs. So I can't file a bug report in KDE because it's a working feature in the official build.

Did you look through the bug reports for insight into what led to those reported issues, workarounds that had some effect, understanding of how ffmpeg and openh264 might or might not be related, if image resolution or scaling is a factor, what fixes KDE devs implemented to get it working, etc.? There is yet much you can research and learn at this point. If all else fails, I would still file a bug report upstream or here at Gentoo. And without further evidence, I am still not convinced it is entirely a Gentoo specific issue. It might still affect distros other than the official KDE build from Neon as you specified. And while that does hint at a possible system configuration issue, a missing library or package, etc. that alone does not indicate it is 100 percent specific to Gentoo. |

If you were to look at the bug report I referred to you will see that spectacle uses the locally installed ffmpeg and kpipewire to record and save screen recordings. Also, an Arch linux user reported a similar issue but that when using a community built package from aur, ffmpeg-full, the issue was resolved. That particular aur package enables "all possible features including libfdk-aac". This leads one to believe that if ffmpeg is missing features or codecs, this type of error may exhibit itself.
When running spectacle from the command line to possibly get more information, I noticed the error:

When looking at use flags for ffmpeg, I see it is built with -vpx. Rebuilding it with +vpx led to spectacle working correctly. You might be having a similar codec issue.
You can select the format the video is saved as in spectacle by going to Configure>Video Saving and choosing the format in the drop down box on the right at the end of 'Filename:' For me the options are WebM/VP9 (which is where I believe vpx comes into play) and MP4/H.264. I am assuming if you have ffmpeg built with the +openh264 you should not have any issues when using that option.
Also, make sure the default 'Save Location' points to a real directory that actually exists on your system.
If you continue to have issues, then run spectacle from the command line, try to record and save a video and post the output here. |

Did you look through the bug reports for insight into what led to those reported issues, workarounds that had some effect, understanding of how ffmpeg and openh264 might or might not be related, if image resolution or scaling is a factor, what fixes KDE devs implemented to get it working, etc.? There is yet much you can research and learn at this point. If all else fails, I would still file a bug report upstream or here at Gentoo. And without further evidence, I am still not convinced it is entirely a Gentoo specific issue. It might still affect distros other than the official KDE build from Neon as you specified. And while that does hint at a possible system configuration issue, a missing library or package, etc. that alone does not indicate it is 100 percent specific to Gentoo. |
Yes, I did see the bug reports. Mostly of the it was with vpx formats (vp8/9), but changing to h264 did not help.
I even did strace. It seems the 'Temporary file URL' is something which must be generated by an external program because there were no systemcalls to open it.
I also tried this as a new user (logging in as a fresh user), but the issue persisted.

When looking at use flags for ffmpeg, I see it is built with -vpx. Rebuilding it with +vpx led to spectacle working correctly. You might be having a similar codec issue.
You can select the format the video is saved as in spectacle by going to Configure>Video Saving and choosing the format in the drop down box on the right at the end of 'Filename:' For me the options are WebM/VP9 (which is where I believe vpx comes into play) and MP4/H.264. I am assuming if you have ffmpeg built with the +openh264 you should not have any issues when using that option.
Also, make sure the default 'Save Location' points to a real directory that actually exists on your system.
If you continue to have issues, then run spectacle from the command line, try to record and save a video and post the output here. |
I already had vpx set. could you share your ffmpeg USE flags?
The error logs that I posted where from journalctl. Running spectacle from the terminal results in the same errors.

| Please keep us updated, I would be very curious to know what could be causing this. The only other question I have is does this occur in both Wayland and X? If you already posted that info I did not see it and apologize. I could replicate the error until I built ffmpeg with the vpx use flag enabled. After that, it worked as expected. |

It's working for me as well, but only after emerging media-libs/nvidia-vaapi-driver (as using the closed-source nvidia drivers).
Anyway, use flags for ffmpeg:
